Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

BPPV or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is the most common form of vertigo with vestibular disorders and is the most successfully treated.

The classic symptoms include:

  • Vertigo - Rolling over in bed (the person describes the room spinning (typically) or the alarm clock moving)
  • Vertigo -getting into or out of bed
  • Dizziness or vertigo -looking up and bending over (i.e. looking into a top cabinet)
  • The dizziness is worse in the mornings
  • The vertigo itself is typically brief and positional, hence the name.  However dizziness or lightheadness and imbalance may last until treated

Although very scary it is very treatable and can be treated within 1-5 visits depending on the nature of the problem.

There are 3 semi-circular canals in each ear that can be affected.  The posterior canal is the most common, by far.  The remaining canals have different maneuvers than the posterior canal for treatment. It is important to assess which ear and which canal is affected for before treatment should continue.
