Functional Neurologic Disorders
Functional Neurologic Disorders is a problem caused by changes in function of the central nervous system.  Dr. Jon Stone, a specialist and researcher in this area, describes it as a "software" problem versus a "hardware" problem of brain structure leading to abnormal movement and sensory input.  It is also known as a dynamic lesion on the brain, in that it is a change in function or how the brain processes movement and sensory information versus a structural lesion on the brain.

Common symptoms associated with FND are dizziness, unsteadiness, tremors, gait disturbances, sensory changes including sensory hypersensitivities to visual motion, sound and touch.

Common Functional Neurologic Disorders:
  • PPPD (dizziness)
  • Functional movement disorders - tremors, gait disorders (hemiplegia), dystonia, dizziness, tics, and cognitive functions
  • Below is a link with a number of other functional neurologic disorders.

Neurologic physical therapy works on retraining patterns of movement and works on adaptation of the sensory systems t0 reduce symptoms and restore normal movement/ function.
