Functional Electrical Stimulation

Functional Electrical Stimulation

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a unit that provides electrical stimulation to either a nerve or muscle belly, to help promote functional use of an otherwise weak or paralyzed muscle.

It is most widely used for symptoms of foot drop related to a neurologic injury or diagnosis such as a stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or Multiple Sclerosis. It can be used to activate the nerve that lifts the foot to prevent foot drop or drag.  FES has strong evidence to support the use with the above diagnosis.

Dr. Wahab has been training students for over 20 years on the use of FES and has several years of success in utilizing it for gait training with patients who have had a stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or Multiple Sclerosis.

Please stop by for a consult on the appropriate use of a FES for gait training.
